On Saturday, December 22 some of us met at the Waffle House at 5:30 AM outside of Oak Mountain State Park for a hardy breakfast before meeting the others in our group of 43 Scouts and Scouters and proceeding to the South Trailhead where we began hiking at 7:00 o’clock. It was a perfect hiking day with weather in the 40’s and 50’s and sunshine.

Everyone was in great spirits and the column stayed tight the whole day. Two Scouters had to leave at the North trailhead and we finished 20 1/2 miles at 5:20 having hiked the Yellow, Blue, White, Red and Green trails. We finished the hike with all 27 scouts and 14 Scouters (including 3 moms). Troops 367 and 538 from the Shelby District and Troops 21, 320, 86, and 76 from the Vulcan District were represented

We passed quite a few trail runners and a half dozen scouts said they would like to run it next year. I told them that when it was only Troop 28 doing the hike that we used to have 4 or 5 boys every year that ran it with some dads. They finished at 1:00 instead of 5:00. I will be looking for at least 3 adults next year to run with the Scouts.
