There is nothing that confuses a new scout parent or volunteer more than when you tell them they are now part of the Vulcan District. More than likely they just got it in their heads that they are part of the Greater Alabama Council and now we throw that on them. Let me try to explain.
The program of the Boy Scouts of America is administered through 276 local councils. The Greater Alabama Council happens to be council number 1. How cool is that! Our council is divided into 12 districts. We posted an article about the districts just recently, check it out.
As I mentioned in that article, districts are made of units. A unit is a Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or Varsity Team.
I was looking through my father’s 1951 edition of the handbook for boys. I came across this image and I thought it explained the relationship between you and the council pretty well.
